Outstanding natural settings
Having provided icy filming locations for The Empire Strikes Back and helped to inspire Disney’s Frozen, Norway is a country full of adventure! Family activity holidays to Northern Norway take you to its topmost region: a scenic slice of Europe where land and sea blend together. Mountainous islands meet grand fjords along the coast, while incredible glaciers slide their way towards the Arctic waters. Inland, lakes and rivers mix with pine forest valleys and the backbone of the Scandinavian Mountains – all coated in the white of winter.
The three counties of Northern Norway each have defining attributes. Nordland has over 18,000 islands: many are full of wildlife, and the Vesterålen group are best for whale watching. Here our families can take a boat trip to hopefully say hello to humpbacks and minkes! Neighbouring Troms is covered with numerous picturesque lakes where you can enjoy the likes of ice-fishing, while Finnmark is full of open plateaus which make for some excellent family Northern Lights viewing. This county is also home to the indigenous Sámi people, who have herded reindeer through the Nordic countries for thousands of years. You don’t just have to travel to Finnmark to experience their culture, holidays to Norway will also give you the chance!
Aurora, huskies, and frozen lakes
Better known as the Northern Lights, the glorious Aurora Borealis is visible from all parts of Northern Norway. Travel with us to this region and your family will experience magical hunts for the Northern Lights, with hot drinks and fresh snacks in hand. Another option is to take the whole family on snowmobiles for a guided Aurora hunt as you dash around under the stars!
During the day, Northern Norway offers families a great range experiences sure to excite and be enjoyed by every member of the family. Parents and children will get a real kick out of husky safaris and these are by far our most popular activity: meeting the dogs is great fun, and speeding around the landscape as they pull your sled along is unforgettable. The many Norwegian fells and slopes you’ll encounter also lend themselves very well to a toboggan race or two!

Authentic Norway
Alongside must-do Scandinavian activities like dogsledding, Northern Lights watching, and wilderness safaris, we always aim to include itinerary highlights which both reflect the destinations and are as family-friendly as possible.
Likewise, we make sure you are connected with Sámi heritage on our Norwegian holidays. Sample their lifestyle by sitting inside a traditional tent and eating a meal prepared on an open fire using regional ingredients. Children will definitely enjoy visiting a reindeer farm and learning about how the Sámi bring up their herds in the wilderness: there are plenty of photo opportunities with these much-loved creatures as well.
