Treat the family to a range of fabulous Finnish activities and experiences on this fun-filled holiday to Jeris. You’ll get to try out a host of classic activities on the snow, stay in a wonderful winter cottage, and explore a true wilderness.
As a family, you will journey through this landscape in a range of ways. Sled dogs are some of the most enthusiastic creatures you will ever meet and you'll enjoy their company on a 15-kilometre husky ride and, during a snowmobile safari with net fishing, you’ll see some superb scenery and witness the scale of the wilderness. Another awesome adventure included in this holiday is to head off into the wilderness by Snow Shuttle to hopefully catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Not that the line-up of local delights ends there. There will also be a visit to Torassieppi Reindeer Farm, which has stood since 1847. Learn to throw a lasso and take a reindeer-pulled sleigh ride through the forest.
Jeris is perfectly placed to spot the Northern Lights, so we've organised a workshop with an expert guide who will tell you all about the myths, legends and science behind the Aurora. Hopefully, you will get the chance to witness them at their shimmering best during your stay.
At the end of every adventure, you will return to the warmth of your very own cosy winter cottage accommodation.

Day 1 Arrival and Welcome
Your family getaway begins as you land at Kittilä Airport and are transferred to Hotel Jeris. The transfer will normally take around 45 minutes. Once you have settled in and made your cabin your own you will walk to the main building to have dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Included Meals: Dinner -
Day 2 Torassieppi Reindeer Farm and Northern Lights Workshop
After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Torassieppi. You’ll tour its incredible reindeer farm, which has been around since 1847 and travel further into its history with a visit to the small but fascinating on-site museum. After that, you’ll learn how to throw a lasso like a real reindeer herder before being taken on a magical three-kilometre reindeer sleigh ride around the woods. Lunch will then be served in the hotel restaurant.
In the afternoon, it is time for you to learn about the incredible Aurora Borealis, during a Northern Lights workshop which will last around one hour. You’ll hear the myths and legends associated with the Aurora and be introduced to the science behind them.
Jeris is in a prime location for witnessing this phenomenal light display, so remember to keep an eye on the sky each night.
Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant this evening.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 3 Husky Safari and Sami Evening
This morning features one of our all-time favourite activities – a husky safari! You will get to tour a husky farm close by and meet the energetic team that will be leading you on safari.
The dogs will be harnessed, and the adults will receive full instructions on how to control the sled. You will then all depart on a magical dog sled ride which covers an amazing 15 kilometres. It may be noisy to begin with, but the dogs soon quieten down, silently slipping you over the snow. You will travel in pairs with children typically travelling in the guide's sled and the adults sharing one team between two.
Dinner this evening will be served in the lakeside restaurant or in a traditional kota with an open fire. Afterwards, you will be joined by a local Sámi and you can listen to traditional Sámi joikus. These are sometimes haunting mixes of chant and song, tell of Sámi life and the natural world with which their lives have been so tightly intertwined over the centuries.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 4 Snowmobile Safari and Net Fishing
Today it is time to rev up the action with a snowmobile safari. Full instruction and a safety briefing precede your departure onto the trails for a thrilling ride along the snowy trails. You need to be 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to take the controls and adults will travel two people per machine. Children will travel in a sled pulled by the guide's snowmobile.
You will stop on one of the frozen lakes (the ice is incredibly thick) and learn the techniques of ancient net fishing. Your guide will demonstrate how the Sámi people have traditionally fished here using nets and will also get a fire going and cook up lunch out in the open. Food always tastes better in the fresh air!
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 5 Free day and Aurora Snow Shuttle
Today has been left free for you to relax or book additional activities (payable locally). If you’re addicted to the outdoors, it will be possible to hire snowshoes or cross-country skis and explore more of the natural routes around Jeris at your own pace.
Whatever you decide, you can either have lunch in the hotel restaurant or take a packed lunch with you on your personal adventures.
After dinner in the hotel's restaurant, you will head off on an adventure to search for the Northern Lights. A carriage pulled by the guide’s snowmobile (the type of carriage will depend on the weather conditions on the day) will take you out into the Arctic night. Once you arrive at the campfire site, your guide will get a fire on the go. You can enjoy a warm drink and a snack while, hopefully, catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights. You will be out for around 2 hours in total.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 6 Snowshoeing and Arctic Sauna World
There’s a classic Nordic sport after breakfast today. After a short transfer, a guide will lead you on a snowshoe hike through the surrounding wilderness of the Pallas fell. Lunch will be enjoyed back at the hotel.
Afterwards, you will get to indulge in one of the Finns most favoured pastimes. It is said that the sauna is the first room any Finnish architect considers when planning any building. You can, of course, then take on the challenge of either a dip in the lake or a roll in the snow to really complete the experience - but it is entirely optional and only for those who are in excellent health.
Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant this evening.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -
Day 7 Free day and Lappish Dinner
We’ve kept the end of your holiday free for you to have some free time and try your favourite activities again. If you would like to discuss or book any additional activities in advance please speak to one of our Travel Experts.
This evening a very special Finnish dinner will be served at the hotel.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner -

Hotel Jeris Winter Cottage
Nights: 1-7
Winter Cottage Type A
Hotel Jeris and its winter cottages are on the shores of Lake Jerisjarvi around 20km from the nearest town. They offer families an idyllic location for a holiday in the wilds of Finnish Lapland.
The hotel consists of the main building which is home to the hotel rooms, gift shop and restaurant. The 35 winter cottages are dotted in the surrounding forests.
Hotel facilities:
- All meals are served in the main hotel restaurant. There is always a selection of options which often includes local dishes as well as more international cuisine.
- The buffet breakfast offers a wide selection of cooked and continental options; whilst lunch and dinner are usually a selection of salads, then a choice between a meat/fish main course and a vegetarian option, followed by a set dessert. During December, a special buffet menu and certain soft drinks are also provided for children.
- Tea and coffee are available free of charge throughout the day in the hotel restaurant/bar area.
- There is a small lounge area in the main building where guests can use the free Wi-Fi connection and there is a small shop selling souvenirs and snacks.
- Jeris is home to the lovely Arctic Sauna World just a short walk from the hotel. The spa has strong eco-credentials thanks to its use of entirely renewable electricity and geothermal heating generated from the Jerisjärvi lake. Here there are four saunas each inspired by the four elements; earth, fire, water and air and named after Finnish gods and goddesses. You can also upgrade to the special Northern Lights sauna for a relaxing way to search the skies! If you are feeling brave (and are in good health) try an adventurous dip in the ice pool.
Winter Cottage Type A:
Type A winter cottages (30 square metres) are, on the whole, the closest to the hotel and are ideal for families with small children.
The cabins can vary in size but all sleep from two to four people in one spacious room with a sleeping alcove for two people (generally with a double bed) and a pull-out sofa bed for two more. They are all privately-owned and so the décor and style can vary, but each has a cosy wood-burning stove, clothes-drying cupboard, kitchenette, television, shower room, toilet and a private sauna.
All meals are served in the hotel restaurant.
Cabin guests will receive a small ‘starter pack’ of firewood. Further wood supplies can be purchased locally for approximately 10 euros.
Please note: a limited number of hairdryers are available from reception.

The Specifics
Holiday group size (approximate)
This holiday requires a minimum of 2 people to run, however, on some dates we require a minimum of 10 people for our flight allocation. Maximum 22 people (approximately). Please speak to our Travel Experts for further information.
Group Size
We always try to provide an approximation of the group size you can expect to be with for the duration of each of our holidays. It may be that you are joined by others for parts of your holiday (such as transfers and particular activities) but the above number reflects those you can normally expect to be with from beginning to end. If group size is something which is particularly important to you, please speak to our Travel Experts and they can suggest the best holidays for you.
Tailor-made holiday group sizes will vary for all activities as will the group size for any additional activities you book.
Minimum numbers required for a holiday to operate
Some of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate (as listed in the ‘Group Size’ section). If your holiday departure has not yet reached the minimum number, you will be told at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date is not guaranteed by nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you to discuss the available options as per our booking conditions.
Minimum and maximum age
The minimum age for this holiday can be found in the ‘Key Facts’ section of the holiday overview.
Younger family members may be able to participate but may not be able to take part in all activities. Please contact one of our Travel Experts if you have any questions.
Itinerary amendments
The order of activities listed in this agenda is provided for guidance only, your final and detailed itinerary will be provided either with your final travel documents (which are uploaded into your online account around a week prior to departure) or upon arrival.
Medical History and Advice
We want our holidays to be accessible as they can be and will do our best to accommodate any special requests and requirements where possible. We have a wide range of holidays and destinations and so our travel experts will help find the best holiday for you.
In order to give us the best possible chance to do this we ask that if you or any member of your party has any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday or has any special requirements, that you tell us at the time of enquiry or booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. You may need to provide a doctor’s note and proof of insurance in some cases as the health and safety of our clients is absolutely paramount.
In providing this information you are allowing us to work with our expert local partners to ensure that your whole party can enjoy the holiday. By letting us know in advance we can discreetly work with you to adapt any part of the holiday which may potentially be challenging. Being able to prepare for this in advance makes an incredible difference to what we can offer and minimises any impact on your party and the rest of the group.
Unfortunately, if you choose not to share this information with us in advance then it may limit some or all of the itinerary you have booked, and we cannot be held accountable for any additional costs or missed activities resulting from this.
It is vitally important that you advise us prior to departure of any medical or dietary condition relating to any member of your party so that we may notify our local staff before you arrive. We recommend only drinking bottled water from bottles with unbroken seals and be vigilant about the use of ice in drinks and ice cream.
Insurance
Insurance is not included in your holiday, but it is a pre-requisite to travelling with us. You will need to ensure that you have cover for all the activities that you will be participating in during your holiday.
It is extremely important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Plans do sometimes change, and you will need this policy should you need to cancel your holiday.
If you are struggling to find a suitable policy then details of our preferred provider, who will cover you for all the activities we offer, can be found on our website by clicking here. Please note that this policy is available to EU residents under the age of 75 only.
The UK Foreign Office Advice
Our clients’ safety is at the centre of everything we do, and our operations team continually assesses and monitors the destinations we feature. We carry out thorough risk assessments and work closely with all of our suppliers to continually follow best practice. For up to date travel advice the UK government offers its Travel Aware website as well as the advice detailed below.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Advice
We receive all updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with regards to travel advice and we always ensure that we follow this advice in our operations. The FCO issues travel advisories for countries based on a very wide range of factors. They may provide notification about things as simple as a football match and crowds, or they may go so far as to advise against all travel to a region. We ask all our clients to refer to the relevant Travel Advice by Country for the destinations they are visiting in order to make an informed decision on the safety of the destination based on the details provided. It also provides vital information regarding entry requirements, embassy information, local laws and customs as well as specific safety and health. Guests should take responsibility for keeping themselves up to date with this advice. Please also ensure that, if you are transiting through another country, you have read the advice and meet the entry requirements for that destination too.
The FCO travel advice is applicable to British Passport Holders. Most governments will issue their own travel advice for a region and, if you are not a UK resident then you can find some helpful links below:
Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade http://www.safetravel.govt.nz/
Canadian Consular Affairs Bureau http://voyage.gc.ca/
The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html
If the FCO deems that there is an unacceptable level of risk for UK citizens then, together with the government, they may issue an advisory against all travel to a region or country. If such an advisory is published, then we will act accordingly, and this may require the cancellation, curtailment or amendment of a holiday itinerary. These decisions are made on the basis of ensuring our clients’ safety and will affect all clients on the holiday, regardless of their nationality.
If one of our local experts suggests an amendment due to a situation which develops locally then we may also take the decision to amend an itinerary appropriately.
If we have to cancel your holiday prior to departure you will be offered the option of an alternative trip (where any price difference will either be refunded to or covered by you) or a full refund of the monies paid.
If we have to curtail a holiday, then you will be refunded for any costs for the elements we have been unable to deliver, where we have been able to secure a refund from our suppliers. If we must reroute a holiday, then any basis for refund is determined on a case by case basis and dependent on whether the central holiday experience was provided or not.
Booking activities locally
Additional activities can be booked locally in almost all our destinations. However, as per our booking conditions, we cannot be held responsible for any injury or loss incurred through participation in activities which are booked at your destination outside of our holiday itinerary (see our ‘Terms and Conditions’ for further details).
When arranging any such activity please always ensure that safety is your primary concern.
In some of our destinations, you can borrow or hire equipment for use in your free time. You do so entirely at your own risk. You must ensure that you are correctly prepared, have the necessary equipment and knowledge (maps, etc.) and ensure that where applicable, you follow marked routes. We recommend discussing your plans with the local teams who will be able to advise on the most suitable options for you.
Always let the reception/guide know where you are planning to go and take a torch and mobile phone (with the hotel/guide’s phone number stored). It is also a good idea to leave your contact number and the time you expect to return to the hotel should the hotel need to contact you.
Flight schedule changes and connecting transportation
On your documentation, we will confirm your flight schedule. Sometimes the flight number, routing and timings might change prior to your departure. If the change is classed as a significant change then we will contact you to discuss this. Please see our booking conditions for details.
Flight schedule changes can impact on your pre and post-holiday travel arrangements if these have been booked separately to your holiday. We strongly recommend that you do not book transport (such as trains or transfers), car parking or non-connecting flights to the departure point for your holiday until you have received your final confirmed travel times when your final travel documents are issued. We are not responsible for the effect of any schedule change on your pre or post travel arrangements. We strongly recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible or non-refundable tickets to avoid cancellation and penalty charges.
Booking your own flights cancellation disclaimer
If you have chosen to book your own flights, then you will need to wait until we confirm to you that the holiday departure has met the minimum numbers required to run (if applicable to your chosen holiday). Once the holiday is guaranteed to run, you will be informed and you can then make your arrangements.
If transfers are included in your holiday, please ensure that any potential flights will be met by our standard transfers (speak to one of our Travel Experts for advice) otherwise private transfer supplements may be applicable. Once your flights are booked, please send us a copy of your detailed flight itinerary.
Please be aware that most tickets are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason, we strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket and check the limitations of your cancellation insurance before booking. We cannot be held liable, in the unlikely eventuality that we should be forced to cancel or amend your trip, for losses incurred relating to any flight booking you have made.

The Service received form activities abroad was excellent 16 February 2020 by The Dixey Family
The Service received form activities abroad was excellent, correspondence, information was spot on. The transfers were faultless. I would definitely recommend and will be using again. We loved the snow mobiles, husky and reindeer ride the best. A truly unique experience.

Thank you so much Activities Abroad for such a fabulous holiday! 05 January 2020 by The Cole Family
We're just home from our holiday in Muonio, Finland, at hotel Jeris. I'm not one for writing reviews but feel on this occasion I must! We have never booked a holiday with a travel company before, we usually just find somewhere and hire a car and explore the area ourselves, so I was a little apprehensive about this one I must admit....but I really needn't have worried! We really had the most…
Read more amazing time, and we're so sad that we had to leave.... Firstly, the staff we simply cannot fault. Every single one of the staff at the hotel is worth their weight in gold. They couldn't do enough for us, always so helpful and friendly, they really made us feel comfortable and relaxed and well looked after. Our little boy was poorly during our stay, which meant my husband making a trip to the restaurant to grab a breakfast 'take away'. They boxed everything up and were so concerned about him. They made sure we had all the right numbers in case of an emergency and every time one of our party saw any of them they asked after him. The chef's cooked special food for him, as he lost his appetite, and even brought out a platter of fruit for him after dinner so that he got his vitamins. We were quite overwhelmed! Our guide, Markus, was extremely good fun! Very informative and helpful when needed, and very supportive of our young lad, who struggled a bit due to his illness. Greta, the Activities Abroad rep was brilliant too! She really catered for your every need! We just had the most amazing experience and we can't wait to visit again! The hotel itself is clean and tidy, and we can't fault the food, all fresh all tasty and plentiful. There isn't a shop nearby, however. If I had known this I would have taken a few more supplies seeing as we were staying in a cabin, things like some cereal bars and snacks etc. So, the next time we visit, I will go a bit better prepared. The trips and activities were all very well organised and everything was explained clearly. Thank you so much Activities Abroad for such a fabulous holiday! We've made some lifelong memories as a family (and the Northern Lights came out to play on a couple of evenings too!). I can't recommend this holiday and hotel highly enough. We will definitely be booking with Activities Abroad again.

Jeris - Family Winter Cottage Adventure 24 February 2019 by The Ford Family
For me, a busy mum, your holidays are so well organised that they take away the stress of all the pre holiday planning, booking flights, transfers etc., planning activities and of course the thinking about what we are going to eat and where! Which ultimately means that I too get a good stress free holiday!

Thank you Activities Abroad for an amazing experience! 17 February 2019 by The Gillman Family
We felt confident booking with Activities Abroad based on the first hand knowledge of the sales team who were helpful and responsive. Graham gave me details on how to arrange a taste of downhill skiing for our kids on one of our free days at Olos which worked out perfectly (despite -16 temperature!). The hotel - Our cabin was cosy and comfortable. A 10 minute walk to the main hotel building for…
Read more meals and activities on a well lit off-road path. The food exceeded our expectations - plentiful, tasty, varied, high quality - and gluten free was not a problem at all as most dishes were already GF and alternatives always available. Our kids enjoyed a lot of the meals but there were standard kid-friendly options available at dinner if needed. We brought some snacks but really didn't need them as the meals were so satisfying. Restaurant and reception staff were friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Rose on reception who came and picked up 3 of us in her car when we got lost following cross country trails! Activities - The activities were superb. By the end of the week we had had many wonderful new experiences, learned some new skills and made memories for life. We had been wary of commercialised Lapland experiences but the activities at Jeris were authentic and very professionally organised. Our guide, Kevin, was delightful - enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. Timing was well-judged for families. Equipment - We were provided with excellent snowsuits and boots which coped perfectly with temperatures down to -30 with thermals and a fleece or wool layer - cotton is not recommended. Also light fleece balaclavas, woollen socks and mittens. The kids' mittens were less good than the adult ones which came with thick wool liners. I was glad we brought our own glove liners. The ski goggles we brought were also very useful for protection from wind, snow and cold. In mid-Feb we experienced the full range of weather - light snow, sunshine and temperatures from -30 to +2! The Jeris Hotel lakeside spa was a bonus for a bit of downtime and we all enjoyed the saunas and jacuzzi. We were glad we brought our swimming costumes. Flip-flops would have been useful for moving between the buildings on snowy paths and venturing down to swim in the lake - really!

We intend on coming back in the future 10 April 2018 by The Willison Family
Snowmobiling was fantastic and we intend on coming back in the future to do a longer trip for 2 or 4 nights. We paid a little extra to have our own snowmobiles. The guide, Tonio was fantastic and a great asset to the team. Tonio was particularly informative, helpful, very lovely and great fun. All the staff at the hotel were helpful. My son managed to have a nosebleed on the sheets…
Read more in the cabin and they were quickly changed a new ones left. Our cabin was lovely and cosy and we enjoyed the sauna. The transfers all went smoothly and were punctual.

I can't give a least enjoyable activity 27 February 2018 by The Ratcliffe Family
I can't give a least enjoyable activity - we enjoyed all the activities immensely. I suppose I was looking forward to the ice fishing least but I actually found it really great fun. Our local guide, Becky, was most excellent - informative, friendly, helpful and good company. Our cabin was really excellent - warm, cosy, clean and well equipped. It was more modern and newer than I was expecting -…

We had an AMAZING holiday - the organisation, activities, accommodation and in particular, the staff were just brilliant. Everything was excellent. 20 February 2018 by The Housego Family
All the activities were special but the Husky drive stands out and the Aurora Dome was amazing. What an amazing holiday! The Hotel was excellent, our Winter Cabin was great, the activities (gosh, there were loads!) were so well organised and perfect, the guide (Becky) and Rep (Greta) were both lovely, helpful and so knowledgeable and the cherry on our cake was the Aurora Dome - mind blowing! Thank…

A special week that will be imprinted in our memories forever! 12 February 2017 by The Sandys Family
My wife and I booked to go to Finnish Lapland with our kids (aged 8 and 10) to have some Arctic wilderness adventures and to see the Northern Lights. Well, we were not disappointed! What a fantastically amazing and unique week we had. We stayed in a wood lodge, which was so lovely and warm. The sauna was used at least 3 times a day too. As for the activities...every day was different…
Read more with brilliantly run activities. The husky sledging was great fun. Snowmobiling at 50kph across a frozen lake - awesome. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing were a great way to explore the snow-covered forests. Small groups and excellent guides, really enhanced the experiences we took part in.We were concerned our kids may not eat much, as they are fussy eaters, but how wrong we were. They had so much food every day and tried many a new thing. Varied and plentiful food all week. The Northern Lights. Well, what can I say? We hoped we would see them at least once. We saw them on 5 of the 7 nights, sometimes for hours at a time. Absolutely magical and breathtaking. Go to the middle of the frozen lake late at night to maximise the views. We were so blessed to see them for so long the week we went (you can pay 10 Euros to get a text alert for when they are out too. That helped us catch some unexpected displays too, right outside our cabin). The kids took to all the activities with excitement and enthusiasm and my wife and I had such a special week that will be imprinted in our memories forever!

Seeing the Aurora was magical. 14 February 2016 by Donna Westall
We all enjoyed different things, but snowshoeing, skiing, huskies and reindeer all featured. Snowmobiles were great fun for the drivers. And seeing the Aurora was magical.

We all had a great time 14 February 2016 by Paul Corke
We picked this holiday because of the wide range of activities that were included, and we weren't disappointed. We all had a great time. Katrina was always friendly and helpful and the local guide, Toini, was brilliant. You could tell that she loves her job and she was great with the children. (Most enjoyable activity?): For the rest of the family it was either the reindeer safari or the…
Read more snowmobiles or the skiing or the sledges by the hill depending on when you ask. For me the husky sledding just wins because I loved the combination of man and animals working together; the silence, whilst on the move, combined with the beautiful scenery and the sense of isolation in the wilderness.

Brilliant holiday 25 February 2013 by Alison Muirhead
We had a brilliant holiday! Perfect for the children (10+14), a little challenging but not daunting, they were able to participate at an adult level. Many thanks! We have already been on the website looking at our next possible holiday - perhaps further afield next time.

We had a fantastic holiday which was topped off by seeing the aurora on our last night. The clear starry night was also an incredible experience. We were all very sad to return home.

A fantastic holiday from start to finish 10 April 2012 by Carl Hitchens
A fantastic holiday from start to finish. Totally exhausting but great fun from the first day. The log cabin was great to return to after a hard days outings. The hotel staff were great even presenting my son with a cake on his 8th birthday which we did not ask for or expect.

Excellent 22 February 2010 by Victoria Elliott
Overall the whole family were really impressed with the log cabin at Jeris. The whole place was out of this world - so peaceful. The local guide was fantastic with the children and took time to explain Finnish ways to them. The food at Hotel Jeris was fantastic and the staff were brilliant. Not one activity was unenjoyable. The huskies were fantastic, the excitement of the skidoos skating across…
Read more the lake was exhilarating and the fun of snowshoe walking. The holiday introduced us as a family to Nordic skiing and allowed us to experience new activities as a family. Thank you so much for such a brilliant holiday - it did take our breath away and kept a teenage son away from computers and PS3 so thank you very much.
