Colours and culture
Morocco is a land painted orangey-gold, the centre scattered with desert sands around the spine of the Atlas Mountains – once believed by the Ancient Greeks to stand on the world’s western edge, holding up the heavens. In the west, the country’s winding shore tumbles into the ocean, where surfers frolic on the waves. Holiday here with Activities Abroad and you’ll enter a sizzling outdoor environment bursting with brightness: an ideal sunny destination that isn’t too close or too far.
On the Atlantic coast lies the harbour town of Essaouira, where natural beauty and local life endlessly combine. You’ll regularly travel up here from your riad, or Moroccan villa, in the calm settlement of Sidi Kaouki. It’s less than half an hour to the south, with beaches kissed by sea winds and waters loved by sports enthusiasts. Of course, you’ll also be able to visit well-known Marrakesh. Perhaps best of all is its beating heart, Jemaa el-Fna: a square so full of traditional practices that it helped spark an international Intangible Heritage project from UNESCO. Imagine wandering through the souks: those living, breathing, open-air markets with their colours, sounds, and secrets!
We’ll take you everywhere, from city centres to hidden countryside – by the end, you’ll leave with an all-round experience of this North African nation.
Activities and traditions
Sand, spice, and sunshine await on our Morocco holiday, with a lively combination of physical and cultural activities. There will be something to appeal to all members of your family, with a balanced pace allowing for good amounts of excitement and relaxation.
Conquer the dunes of Cap Sim beach on a camel picnic, riding the ship of the desert up, down, and along the phenomenal coast. You can thunder through the same area on quad bikes, zooming together with a guide to show the way; you can also leave the land behind and learn how to tackle the Atlantic waves in a surfing lesson.

You’ll get an extensive tour of the Marrakesh markets, while in Essaouira, there’s an even more special treat. Accompanied by a chef from your riad, you’ll go hunting for local ingredients before returning for a cookery lesson!
Go beyond urban regions to learn about Berber life with a trip to an unspoilt village. There will be the added opportunity for a full day in the wilderness of the Atlas Mountains, showing you and the children a natural grandeur which is easily missed by holidaymakers who only stick to the likes of Marrakesh.
Moroccan highlights
Our Morocco holiday offers the perfect fusion of activities and local life. Camel rides are something quite different to your standard horse ride – you’ll all be lost in the rhythms and shuffles of your hardy steed whilst after dismounting from a quad bike, after rumbling to the top of a sandy peak and looking out over an expanse of dunes, your whole family will feel empowered.
A favourite with the Activities Abroad team has to be journeying through the souks of Marrakesh and Essaouira. From fortune-tellers and dancers to food stalls and henna artists, they are worlds full of worlds! You’ll have an expert chef by your side to help select the choicest ingredients before preparing a gorgeous tagine.

The riads are splendid open white buildings built in the typical style seen throughout the country. In Marrakesh, you’ll overnight in ‘Luxury Tents’ – though ‘tent’ does them no justice at all! Grand, printed canvas roofs are spread over princely walls plastered in the traditional ‘tadelakt’ fashion; the insides are filled with vibrant furniture. It’s a royal way to end your stay!
