Underrated, undisturbed
Many families heading to Portugal for sun and sea choose the Algarve. Keeping to our company philosophy of taking you away from busy touristic areas for authentic experiences, we’ve set our Portugal activity holiday in the quiet region above this: the Alentejo Coast. Bring the kids here and you can safely say goodbye to crowded beaches. It’s a mighty stretch of sandy beauty that never seems to end, dotted with fantastic surfing spots. The whole strip is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Keep an eye out for rare wildlife in this protected area, which includes marine otters and white storks!
Meeting the Atlantic in the centre of the Alentejo Coast is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. The Mira runs pleasantly over the land and is a hotspot for canoeing and boating activities. It has formed sweeping valleys with lovely hiking paths, many of which also have splendid lagoons inviting everyone for a swim. At the mouth of the Mira is the cosy town of Vila Nova De Milfontes, often chosen by Portuguese city-dwellers for a getaway in their own country. It’s at the heart of all the beach-based activity sites!
Fun on the coast
There’s no place for surfing quite like the Alentejo Coast. Welcoming waters and perfect waves make it well-suited for everyone, whether you’re new to the sport or an undiscovered Kelly Slater! You’ll be taught by the very best experts: surf lovers who glide on the Atlantic day in and day out. There will be opportunities to keep practising throughout your holiday as you can hire equipment and get more tuition locally.
You can’t visit this part of Portugal without heading out on the River Mira. You can all paddle downstream together as you take on one of the canoe routes and admire a host of pretty sights along the way.

If you walk through one of the valleys here, why not take a cooling break from your sunny surroundings and splash around in a hidden lagoon? Better still, get creative and build a raft to test on its surface.
Back on land, you will embrace pedal power and cycle along a magnificent coastal track. The Alentejo Coast is also lined with charmingly rugged cliffs where you and the children will get an introduction to abseiling and zip wire challenges.
Water sports haven
Our selection of both coastal and inland water sports on this holiday makes it a winner with families. If you’ve never surfed before, don’t be daunted by the prospect of getting familiar with the board and waves. Team members in our office remember how their first time trying the sport was made so much easier by the presence of our helpful instructors, who patiently took them through the basics.
We greatly recommend exploring the Mira and the land that lies close by.

We also recommend Pêgo das Pias, which is nicely set in a rocky hideaway not too far from Vila Nova De Milfontes.
Activities aside, a huge advantage of being in such a coastal location is the delectable seafood: grilled fish and gorgeous mussels, all freshly caught and prepared in traditional styles. Even choosy children won’t be able to resist!
