Unspoilt by busy tourism
A review of Kittila Lapland Winter Adventure by Hazel Taylor-SiddonsJust come back from a fantastic holiday based in Kittila - Northern Finland inside the Arctic Circle. It is a small town with one hotel, one main road and unspoilt by busy tourism. The staff and welcome at the hotel was warm and friendly even at midnight after driving up from Rovaniemi! The guide in our case Jussi (pronounced Yussi) was great - he looks after the group from breakfast, through your…
Read more activities and into the evening. The rooms are simply furnished but warm with great, hot showers. The light in February is similar to UK so you can see during your activities unlike in December. The hotel kindly provides clothing as listed for your full visit so if you go out to see Northern Lights then you are still warm. Our one disappointment was not seeing an Aurora in full vision but you can’t blame anyone for that. Getting on to the activities - they were as described and made a great change from skiing resorts of central Europe. Snowmobiling along tracks direct from hotel to frozen lake, then on to icing fishing - glad my dinner didn’t depend on it. We tried cross-country skiing and snowshoe walking, a great way to see more of the local area as once you leave the main road you need these! The highlight was the day on the reindeer farm and husky ride. Waiting for huskies to be harnessed and then you are off with the dogs barking and running through the forest and out onto the frozen lake and Arctic wilderness beyond For our options on the last day many paid to go downhill skiing at Levi, while I chose horse riding and others shopping and walking. The food in the hotel was good and suitable for the trip, and we tried some tasty local dishes. My advice would be don’t go at Christmas but wait for a little more light to get the best from your stay, unless you need to see Santa!
