White Water Rafting on the River Soca

I have a problem with rafting on the River Soca (pronounced “sotcha), basically, I find it very hard to concentrate on the actual job in hand i.e. paddling.

The reason is that the Soca and indeed, the Soca Valley are as beautiful as anywhere I’ve ever travelled.

I’ve visited this peaceful and idyllic valley with its towering mountain scenery, alpine meadows and fast-flowing emerald green river more than 20 times and it has only once disappointed. Unfortunately, on that occasion it poured with rain all weekend just when we were accompanied by a BBC crew who struggled valiantly to capture the timeless wonder of this striking river valley.

Sit in one of those glorious meadows festooned with myriad wild flowers and listen to the sound of nature that surrounds you and it’s almost impossible to believe that this valley has an extremely turbulent past. During World War 1 the valley witnessed fighting on a massive scale during which over 300,000 soldiers lost their lives.

To this day you can still see vestiges borne of the conflicts. Mule trails where Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers hauled guns to the mountainous peaks criss-cross the landscape testament to a history that seems completely out of place in such a serene setting.

Anyway, those mule trails are just one of the reasons I am rubbish at white water rafting here. How can anybody concentrate on negotiating the river’s fast flowing rapids when you are surrounded by such stunning majesty? Many are the times I’ve been rightly chastened by my expert guide as my focus drifts yet again to the jagged mountain skyline thousands of feet overhead.

Paddle, paddle!!! Stop looking at the scenery!!! they implore in vain because it’s almost impossible to drag your eyes away from this dramatic valley.

The Soca Valley reminds me of so many things. Remember Heidi, the little girl who lived with her grandfather in the Swiss Mountains? That’s the Soca Valley. Remember Steve McQueen on his motorbike during The Great Escape? That’s the Soca Valley…….minus the barbed wire defences I hasten to add! Slovenia is timeless and the Soca is the jewel in its crown. So, if you want your family holiday to include thrills and exhilaration amidst absolutely unforgettable scenery then this is the place for you!

Just don’t forget to paddle otherwise, like me, you might just get told off!!!
